MASTERCLASSES

To support the 2021 production of CATS, Warrnambool Theatre Company and Holiday Actors were supported by Regional Arts Victoria and South West Community Foundation to deliver four masterclasses in theatre skills: audition technique, movement, set painting and theatre makeup. We thank RAV and SWCF for their support of creative practice in South West Victoria. Holiday Actors is delivering a Puppetry masterclass in October 2022 and the companies plan to deliver more masterclasses in the future. 

Masterclass: Set Painting

Learn how to make wood look like stone, a new chair look antique and many more skills to elevate theatre sets to the next level with paint.

Saturday 4th December 2021 10am-4pm

Join set painting experts for a 5 hour masterclass that will give participants the tools to confidently create sets for the stage. 

No prior artistic skill required; all are welcome to learn. 

Professional artist and  One Day Studios Executive Producer Gareth Colliton and artist and teacher Georgina Finnigan will guide participants through the theory and practice of set painting. 

Start with the theory and detail at One Day Studios between 10.00am-12.30pm and then try out all the techniques for yourself at Goodwin Hall between 1:30pm-4.00pm. 

Event fee includes a studio art folder with set painting instructions and notes, as well as all materials for the day.

This is the third of Holiday Actors and Warrnambool Theatre Company'ssuite of Theatre Skills Masterclasses, presented in partnership with One Day Studios Warrnambool, with the support of Regional Arts Victoria and South West Community Foundation.

About the experts:

 

Gareth Colliton

Gareth is an Artist and Social Entrepreneur, with over 30 years of experience in community arts projects. As a professional artist, his works have been hung in major exhibitions such as the Salon des Refuses in Sydney, and are held in both private and public gallery collections.

Gareth has always enjoyed making sets, props and costumes, and have done little bits and pieces for Australian movies, NBC and even a small West End play in London. Ever since helping to make sets for the Holiday Actor's production of Pippin, he's worked behind the scenes on many stage plays for HA, WTC and local Schools. 

Georgina Finnigan 

Georgina's intention as an artist is to bring a Director's visual dream to life. She's also passionate about sharing her knowledge in order to build skills within theatre community. Over the years Georgina has trained many volunteers, who can now skilfully produce wood, brick, sandstone, render, aged furniture, cobblestone and scenery - all with paint! 

Georgina comes with a wealth of experience, having run set teams and/or painted sets on more than 20 shows for Primary Performers, HA, WTC and local schools. Added to that a passion to reuse and recycle and we've got a creative powerhouse ready to put every scrap to good use. 

Masterclass: Theatre Makeup

CATS makeup team and South West TAFE students will be joined by Kryolan's professional makeup team for a 6 hour makeup masterclass to hone their stage makeup skills. 

Participants will learn how to create a face for the stage and create a signature look for one of the characters from WTC & HA's production of CATS. 

Locals will learn from international leaders of the field. For over 74 years, Kryolan makeup has been a staple in top make-up artists’ kits worldwide. Widely regarded as the make-up industry standard, Kryolan is the leading preferred make-up brand for professionals.

Masterclass: Movement

Free your body and enhance your performance on stage.

The cast of CATS joined movement experts Mitch Wills and Tobin Varley in a 4 hour workshop to get them moving like cats!

 

Mitch Wills is a 2018 graduate of the Federation University Arts Academy in Ballarat. Since graduating Mitchell has performed with The Australian Shakespeare Company in Twelfth Night (Sebastian), Macbeth (Donalbain) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Lysander, Snout and Flute), The Girl As Green As Elderflower (Marco), and PTV Law and Order (Frank Ston). Mitchell is a co-founder of Sevenfold Theatre Company, directing their very first production of Much Ado About Nothing.  

Tobin Varley is also a graduate of the Federation University Arts Academy in Ballarat. Since graduating Tobin has performed in Rebooted (film) and Ride like a Girl (film). He has also directed and choreographed a number of amateur theatre productions including Sweet Charity and Wicked.

Masterclass: Audition Technique

Enhance your chance in the audition room with tips and tricks from the professionals.

50 budding performers joined acting and vocal experts for a 2 hour masterclass aimed at honing technique to help individuals to shine at their next audition. 

Professional actor and teacher Dan Haberfield overviewed the best way to prepare, perform and reflect on the audition process. 

International performer and vocal teacher Leah Oswin will impart gems of wisdom to help you get the most out of your voice, choose the right song and perform to the best of your abilities in the audition room. 

Participants will also be able to practise in a mock audition and gain feedback from the experts. This is the first of Holiday Actors and Warrnambool Theatre Company's suite of Theatre Skills Masterclasses, presented in partnership with Lighthouse Theatre Warrnambool, with the support of Regional Arts Victoria and South West Community Foundation.
